IPEd Conference 2017 is next week and guess who is going?
Yay! I am off to the IPEd conference! And then of course you would ask “Yeah, ok Mari, what does IPEd stand for?” IPED: Institute of Professional Editors. Professional society of editors working either in-house or freelance throughout Australia. Basically, once every two years, somewhere in a state capital, the IPEd conference is set up and run by the local branch of IPEd. In 2013, it was our turn in Perth and yours truly was the IPEd Conference convenor. Yes. There is a video on the about me page. Go watch it. We were cool. In 2015, the IPEd Conference was in Canberra but I could not go. I was…

July 2016 Writing Calendar
I decided to put this calendar for the month of June together on a whim. And then people loved it. So this is the monster list of everything even remotely writerly and literary that is going on in Perth and WA in the month of July 2016 from today onwards. So a few quick answers to questions: Will this list always be on this site? MEAA WA is keen to cross-post/host/something along those lines. This will also be cross-posted at Emily Paull‘s site. And possibly on DWOA once we tweak a few things. Can you compile a list for Victoria and Melbourne? Not at this point – no time to spare.…

The Writing Calendar: June 2016
I decided to put this calendar for the month of June together on a whim. And then it took forever. So this is the monster list of everything even remotely writerly and literary that is going on in Perth and WA in the month of June from today onwards. Anyone who says the arts is dead in Perth is wrong – it was tiring to compile and it is tiring to even contemplate. IF this does prove useful to you, let me know if you want me to do one each month. IF so, then Emily Paull will be helping to collate info & we will be cross posting here with…

Viva La Novella, Formaldehyde and Jane Rawson and I
I just flew back from Melbourne over the weekend. I was in Melbourne for a reason: to help launch a book I had handpicked and edited for the Viva La Novella competition. If you’re following me on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram, you would know all about it already. The book was Formaldehyde by Jane Rawson – for months I had alluded to “the book” and “the author” keeping it under wraps as much as possible. My thanks to David Henley and Pam Hewitt for making it all happen. So now I need you to go pick up a copy and read it. In this day and age, you as…

Crimescene WA & Real Scientists
I am really rather excited about the second week of October this year. Why? Well, the week starts on the 6th of October. And at midnight sharp on the 6th of October, I take over the @realscientists account on Twitter. The @realscientists account is curated/run each week by a scientist, science writer, science artist, science communicator, science illustrator… you get the idea. The aim of the project is to get more information about science, all sorts of science, out to the public. And I am part excited, part terrified, part nervous about taking over tweeting about what I do to do with science for a whole week. If you have…

Australian Women Writers Challenge, Book Reviews, Events, IPEd Con 2013, Journalism, Political journalism, Projects, Science journalism, Updates
Where have I been?
Recovering mostly. The conference is over. But the organisation part of it isn’t. There are accounts to be finalised and even now, still a lot of emails to answer. So let me digress to answer the most often asked question via email now: Conference proceedings will be posted on the website and you will all be emailed to be told when they get uploaded. But what else have I been up to? Well, I have had a particularly weird and busy time of it and a lot of it has involved writing. So without further ado, here is the list: I have reviewed: Amanda Curtin’s Elemental which will end up in…

Interview with Nury Vittachi on the 6th IPEd National Editors' Conference 2013
[wpcol_2third id=”” class=”” style=””]So who exactly is Nury Vittachi? Well, apart from being a crime fiction writer and a keynote at the 6th IPEd National Editors’ Conference here in Perth in April 2013, I’ll let him do the talking: Nury Vittachi in a nutshell? A small, bald Asian writer who was born on earth and still spends a fair bit of time there. Yes, so just so you know, he’s also exceptionally funny. Writers are cool, right? Yes, but only because few of us earn enough money to pay our heating bills. Why does he want to come to the conference? Why bother? Well, we asked him to – some of…
