MEAA Update for August 2018
Introduction The MEAA (Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance) is the union for journalists and writers and I thought I should start doing this monthly so that whether you are a member or not, you were aware of what the union is trying to do to help journalism and journalists. It also helps you be more informed especially if you have ideas for how the union can do more. So I will tell you what I can tell you – sometimes there are awesome things I am dying to tell you about that I cannot because they are still in planning stage behind the scenes, so please do keep that in…

Day 4: Freedom to write, freedom for writers
Day 4 already. Well, nothing was going to happen on Day 1 given how tired and jetlagged I was. Today, most of the day was pretty boring. I had not slept well the night before. So the day was full of waking, sleeping, doing things I needed to do like eat and so on. I thought about the book a lot. And then I did my makeup, changed, called an Uber and went to see my friend Vicki Laurie interview Peter Greste at the WA State Library. So three things happened today on Day 4: Peter Greste pleasantly surprised me. I was very happy about that. Thank you Peter Greste.…

Day 3: So many emotions
Day 3 and I am just grateful. I didn’t get to sleep until five am because I was just so thrilled that I had met my goal. You get a high after you write and type everything in. But I did sleep in bursts till about noon. I would wake up, do some work related things, sleep a bit, write a bit and so on. I woke up at noon and went over to the main house and the office to meet Shannon who is the director here at KSP Writers Centre. I gave her some things from Sri Lanka and she offered to do a pharmacy run for me.…

My top 10 posts in 2016
It is a fact of life that whenever you try to plan your life you end up dropping something at some point – life intervenes and you have to. You have to prioritise. In 2016 it was this blog. But it is interesting to see what my top 10 posts were for 2016 in terms of how many people viewed/read them. I got views despite not being as active as I wanted to be on the blog. I am hoping to change that this year. It is also interesting to see what people read and to try and unpick why that was the case. PS: All headings are clickable and…

July 2016 Writing Calendar
I decided to put this calendar for the month of June together on a whim. And then people loved it. So this is the monster list of everything even remotely writerly and literary that is going on in Perth and WA in the month of July 2016 from today onwards. So a few quick answers to questions: Will this list always be on this site? MEAA WA is keen to cross-post/host/something along those lines. This will also be cross-posted at Emily Paull‘s site. And possibly on DWOA once we tweak a few things. Can you compile a list for Victoria and Melbourne? Not at this point – no time to spare.…

The writing plan for June
It’s June today. A June day, today, let’s say since June began the day before yesterday. On this June day my TBR is neither pile nor stack, it is a scatter instead, in bags, on shelves, across the floor, under laptops and beds. It’s also not To Be Read but rather like quantum, a mix between the two, some To Be Read but some also read already so To Be Reviewed. I need a plan.

Watch “Schrödinger’s cat: A thought experiment in quantum mechanics – Chad Orzel” on YouTube
An explanation of why cats rule the internet and how electrons behave for the science journalists out there. 🙂
-
Watch “How statistics can be misleading – Mark Liddell” on YouTube
Numeracy can be a stumbling block for journalists. For people used to working with words, it can be a struggle to figure out what statistics are saying and if they actually are hiding anything or misleading anyone. This TED Ed lesson is a good place to start with an explanation of Simpson’s Paradox.

My story on China’s circuit breaker mechanism
I recently got back from two months in Sri Lanka where I worked as a weird mix of intern and reporter and production assistant and researcher for both a TV channel called Newsfirst and a radio channel called Yes FM. They allowed me to take some of the work I had done for my portfolio when I left. So here is some of the work I did. This is the story on the circuit breaker mechanism that China trialled in early January. It was part of why the global economy in January was so shaky that oil prices got affected a lot more than they otherwise might have been. I…

Week 4 or How to survive NYE week in Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka December 2015 – February 2015 Trip
It's been a weird week to say the least. It's been the kind of week where you think it has been a few days since something happened and in reality it was just 24 hours ago. Yeah, that kind of week. That's probably due to NYE being smack bang in the middle of the week and that driving everyone a little crazy but nevertheless it was rather odd.
