Upcoming events in June 2018
I am going to be rather tired this month. But that’s a good thing because you get to see me at several events during June. Check out the events page. Continuum Panels The very first one kicks off in two days time: So You Want To Be A Book Reviewer? This is an awesome panel at the Continuum Speculative Fiction Convention at the Jasper Hotel in Melbourne running from Friday 8 June to Monday 11 June. I am on it with Figgy and Elizabeth Fitzgerald and it starts at 5 pm on Friday. We will discuss how book reviewing changes depending on how you do it, what you need to…

The best Australian books that 7 Australian writers loved in 2016
I wanted to write about some of the best books by other Australian writers that I had read and been blown away by during 2016. And then I thought – why not ask them who they read in 2016 that was amazing ANDÂ an Australian author? So that then I could have a list of books to then go read myself in 2017? So I did. I yelled out into the Twittersphere: Australian #writers: what was the best book by an Australian that you read this year? I want to write a blog post & will link back to you. — Marisa Wikramanayake (@mwikramanayake) December 24, 2016 And true enough, over…

July 2016 Writing Calendar
I decided to put this calendar for the month of June together on a whim. And then people loved it. So this is the monster list of everything even remotely writerly and literary that is going on in Perth and WA in the month of July 2016Â from today onwards. So a few quick answers to questions: Will this list always be on this site? MEAA WA is keen to cross-post/host/something along those lines. This will also be cross-posted at Emily Paull‘s site. And possibly on DWOA once we tweak a few things. Can you compile a list for Victoria and Melbourne? Not at this point – no time to spare.…

All my worries as a WOC writer
This is a list of worries that Marlee Jane Ward, award winning writer, thought I should post about. In the hope that it would help. So here we go. I worry about a lot of things as a writer. I worry about a lot of things anyway. And after a week of funding and job cuts for both the arts and journalism, I am more worried. Here’s what I worry about along with some ranting – perhaps you can relate. They may be unfounded or not – the point is I worry about all this stuff. TW: possible triggering with mentions of patriarchy, racism and bias. Let me know if…

Why my brain has no space and why I have no time
So here is the news. I am going to slow down considerably on writing HIM. I can hear you: “You were supposed to finish by mid-April!” Yes, I know. The funny thing about books is that they don’t generally behave the way you would like them to. Ditto for life. So why am I decelerating on HIM at the moment? Lots of reasons but mostly: I want to enter the Vogel Awards and the Richell Prize. The deadline for Vogels is 31 May. The deadline for Richell is 1 June. I want to enter Sedition into the Vogels but that means editing Sedition before 31 May which at the moment…

I am now on Patreon
Over the past year, I have been looking into various means and platforms for crowdfunding. Why? Because I have a lot of ideas for novels and projects and while I make enough to support myself, sometimes these novels and projects incur costs to get them underway. The novels, for example, once the manuscripts are done and at first draft, require editing in order to actually be as cohesive and clear as possible before a potential publisher or agent or competition judge sees them. But isn’t that part of what I do? Yes but while that is the service I can provide for other authors, it is not one I can…

Capering criminally with the challenge: what I read for Australian Women Writers 2013
In 2013, I joined the Australian Women Writers blog and project as the non-fiction contributing editor. This meant I also ended up taking the challenge of at least reading if not reviewing various books by female Australian authors. I read, I reviewed, I interviewed. Here's the round up of the books, the authors and the fun.

How to write a book: Part 1: Introduction
Three years is a long time. Three years ago, I was asked to run an online group on how to write books. The posts ended up here. A lot has changed in three years. It’s time to re-issue the posts with updated information. So for the next few weeks, every Wednesday (or for some of you, Tuesday night) there will be a post to do with writing a book, answering a specific question in your email and posted on this blog. What’s your part in this? Well, you are welcome to sit back and read the posts but you can also participate. You don’t need to be writing a book,…
