    The NYWF-ty List

    October 11, 2018 / No Comments

NYWF is National Young Writers Festival and this is the "NYWFty" ("nifty") list because it is truly nifty and is full of the resources the young writers were asking me and other people about at all the #NYWF2018 sessions over the past weekend.

IPEd Conference 2017 is next week and guess who is going?

    September 6, 2017 / No Comments

Yay! I am off to the IPEd conference! And then of course you would ask “Yeah, ok Mari, what does IPEd stand for?” IPED: Institute of Professional Editors. Professional society of editors working either in-house or freelance throughout Australia. Basically, once every two years, somewhere in a state capital, the IPEd conference is set up and run by the local branch of IPEd. In 2013, it was our turn in Perth and yours truly was the IPEd Conference convenor. Yes. There is a video on the about me page. Go watch it. We were cool. In 2015, the IPEd Conference was in Canberra but I could not go. I was…

    July 2016 Writing Calendar

    July 1, 2016 / 5 Comments

I decided to put this calendar for the month of June together on a whim. And then people loved it. So this is the monster list of everything even remotely writerly and literary that is going on in Perth and WA in the month of July 2016 from today onwards. So a few quick answers to questions: Will this list always be on this site? MEAA WA is keen to cross-post/host/something along those lines. This will also be cross-posted at Emily Paull‘s site. And possibly on DWOA once we tweak a few things. Can you compile a list for Victoria and Melbourne? Not at this point – no time to spare.…

All my worries as a WOC writer

    May 13, 2016 / 1 Comment

This is a list of worries that Marlee Jane Ward, award winning writer, thought I should post about. In the hope that it would help. So here we go. I worry about a lot of things as a writer. I worry about a lot of things anyway. And after a week of funding and job cuts for both the arts and journalism, I am more worried. Here’s what I worry about along with some ranting – perhaps you can relate. They may be unfounded or not – the point is I worry about all this stuff. TW: possible triggering with mentions of patriarchy, racism and bias. Let me know if…

Rapping for the 6th IPEd National Editors' Conference, 2013

    November 14, 2012 / 2 Comments

Yes, ok, I know it seems odd. and it must have seemed odd when this status popped up on my Facebook profile the other day. Apparently editors can rap. Who knew? *is killing herself laughing*   It started with past Society of Editors (WA) President, Robin Bower, who is on the conference planning committee, emailing me and one other committee member. Planning the conference happens at high speed so emails are many and fly past in a quick flurry so for convenience we had started referring to each other with initials. Robin being Robin, first she started with “Hey, M & M” but chocolate wasn’t good enough for her…

    November 2, 2012 / No Comments

Hi everyone, One of the projects taking up my time these days is organising the 6th IPEd National Editors Conference which will be in Perth in April 2013. We have international and national writers, publishers and editors attending and it’s going to be absolutely fantastic. We opened registrations yesterday so if you are in Perth in April and are keen to attend, go book now for an early bird discount on fees AND to make sure you have a place at one of the workshops we will be running and the extra events like dinners and cocktail parties.

    Copyright issues

    May 11, 2011 / 1 Comment

The lovely Janine Ripper requested the low down on copyright issues for writers.   Here it is as succinctly as I can put it: 1) Anything you write whether it is recorded on paper or on disk or on the internet in a blog, as soon as you write it, is copyrighted to you. As soon as your work takes on a tangible form, it is copyrighted to you. Automatically. If you write under a pseudonym, the copyright is extended for 70 years after the moment it was first created especially if they cannot figure out the identity of the author.  Otherwise, it is 70 years after the date of…

Why you shouldn't let your muse get drunk on champagne/how to braintrain your muse

    May 4, 2011 / 1 Comment

Muses and alcohol… when you need control, that’s not a healthy mix.   So this came about because someone I know who requests writing advice on a regular basis, said she had a muse problem. The person she had based her muse on was going through a change of circumstances and that meant that she felt uninspired to continue writing – the change didn’t fit the story.   So I thought I’d clear up some things about muses.

The writing process, step by step

    April 27, 2011 / 1 Comment

We discussed the process of writing in the last post. This post is about the steps in writing a book and getting published. So the first one was about how to get started with writing as a hobby or getting used to writing in general process wise and this is about the process of writing, editing and publishing a particular book.

    How do I get started?

    April 20, 2011 / 2 Comments

There’s a simple answer to this question. I get asked it a lot. The answer is this: You write.   Then there is the question: What do I write about? The answer: Whatever you want to write about. Basically what people want to know is what is the next step?
