9 things I did not expect in 2017 & Happy New Year!
2017 has been a year full of ups and downs. Or at least for me, a lot of things that I well – did not expect to happen. Not to me. I am still quite giddy and grateful and in other ways also sad. We had a lot of unnecessary violence, hate and tragedy this past year. I did not expect… so much travelling I did not expect to travel as much as I did. I criss crossed Australia for the IPEd 2017 Editors’ Conference in Brisbane as a speaker and for the MEAA for union meetings. You can catch up on my conference updates here. I did not expect……

Reader question: what sort of music do you listen to when writing?
The simple answer is that it varies. At one point while writing Sedition, I listened to UB40 and a lot of reggae. I like reggae. I like drums and saxophone. At another point there was a lot of old ’20s jazz standards I listened to that you can download from here. For free. Right now editing Sedition, I am listening to my friend’s surrealist nerd punk pop rock stuff – her band is called My First Telescope. But to work on HIM, I often write while going through the backlog of vlogbrothers videos on Youtube on my phone. Or while catching up on the Wimbly Womblies’ progress in FIFA. As in…

Why my brain has no space and why I have no time
So here is the news. I am going to slow down considerably on writing HIM. I can hear you: “You were supposed to finish by mid-April!” Yes, I know. The funny thing about books is that they don’t generally behave the way you would like them to. Ditto for life. So why am I decelerating on HIM at the moment? Lots of reasons but mostly: I want to enter the Vogel Awards and the Richell Prize. The deadline for Vogels is 31 May. The deadline for Richell is 1 June. I want to enter Sedition into the Vogels but that means editing Sedition before 31 May which at the moment…

2013's very odd resolution list
This being the start of 2013, of course everyone is talking about New Year Resolutions. In fact, come December 1st everyone starts ruminating on this topic. And then of course there is a lot of angst over what one hasn’t done yet and that horrible nagging feeling that somehow you are running out of time to do X, Y and Z and therefore be happy. So in the interests of preserving some sanity here, because let’s be honest, me being me, I have very little sanity or so people tell me, let’s do this differently. What was 2012 like? Well, lets see. It was unexpectedly social at points – in…

The Australian Women Writers Challenge 2013
The challenge is to read, review and promote Australian female writers in 2013. You can sign up here. I guess a special part of this challenge is that as I am an Australian female writer, I should try to get my book finished as well. So I won’t just be reviewing, I will be writing as well. So I will update you as I go. Australian Female Authors & Titles My first title to be reviewed will be Kerry Greenwood’s latest Phryne Fisher novel Unnatural Habits. My (probably third, rather than second since I do not have the book with me right now) will be Amanda Curtin’s latest collection of short…

Writing Meme: Write Anything
I’s not a Monday but I am bored. Here you go – three questions to answer: 1. List one of your writing goals for the upcoming month and how likely you are to accomplish it. Write a lot of science network wa articles? Accomplishing it is easy as far as going through my feed reader and sending off potential ideas to my editor, getting the ok and then contacting the people involved. Then I freak out about interviewing them, interview them and then I freak out about writing the articles. My editor gets them though. 2. What genre or subject you would like to write about that you aren’t currently?…
