Capering criminally with the challenge: what I read for Australian Women Writers 2013
In 2013, I joined the Australian Women Writers blog and project as the non-fiction contributing editor. This meant I also ended up taking the challenge of at least reading if not reviewing various books by female Australian authors. I read, I reviewed, I interviewed. Here's the round up of the books, the authors and the fun.

Five years!
It’s been five years since I started freelancing. Or at least it was on Saturday. Five years. Wow. A lot can happen in five years. I started freelancing because I knew it would take awhile to get my foot in the door and work in-house and also because I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to. Freelancing is great – it allows me to work with a lot of different people, it allows me to meet different people and it allows me to mentor some and be mentored by others. It allows me to try new things and to keep constantly learning. And I am reminded that it also means that…

Best places in Fremantle to write
A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction. – Virginia Woolf, ‘A Room of One’s Own’ And if you need a change of scenery, then here are the best places in Fremantle in which to write. They are in no particular order and I am only listing the great things about them – find the one that is your particular nesting ground. As for criteria – warmth, wi-fi, food and drink and a general sense of people being around is the bare minimum for me as well as minimal distraction. Dome cafe, South Terrace/Cafe Strip, Fremantle What is awesome about it?…

My latest journalism work for Curtin
At the moment, I occupy a desk chair in Curtin University’s Digital Media Unit. And so a lot of what I get to do is fun. I get to help keep an eye on the social media and come up with pretty cool ideas like what we get to do with Google Plus Hangouts. But I also get to keep my hand in journalism: I get to write news stories for Curtin’s news site. So here is a list of the stories I have written so far (click on the article title to read more): Indigenous kids run for PM What would you say in your first speech if you…

Where have I been?
Recovering mostly. The conference is over. But the organisation part of it isn’t. There are accounts to be finalised and even now, still a lot of emails to answer. So let me digress to answer the most often asked question via email now: Conference proceedings will be posted on the website and you will all be emailed to be told when they get uploaded. But what else have I been up to? Well, I have had a particularly weird and busy time of it and a lot of it has involved writing. So without further ado, here is the list: I have reviewed: Amanda Curtin’s Elemental which will end up in…

The Rockstar Freelance Lifestyle
Speakers/Presenters: Sarah J H Fletcher, Abigail Nathan, Patrick Horneman, Karen Strain, Dinesh Aggarwal and Marisa Wikramanayake The idea originally came about via a Twitter discussion between Sarah, Abigail and I. We had met at Sydney in 2011 where Abigail had the both equally pleasurable and painful experience of helping to plan a conference and I was about to embark on it myself. But then there was much waving of hands. We wanted to make it fun as well as helpful. And I ran into Patrick Horneman at the MediaPass Student Industry days for journalism graduates and students where I was expounding on freelancing as a journalist and he was expounding…

The final #ipedcon2013 Program!
Today we got to see the final #ipedcon2013 program. This is what lucky delegates will find in their bags on Thursday next week! It’s another reminder that this is actually happening. It’s still a bit hard to believe. – Marisa Wikramanayake, Convenor

What do you mean there is a conference in four days' time?
About two years ago I put my hand up to be conference convenor for the 6th IPEd National Editors Conference in Perth in 2013. We are now a mere four days away from the event and no one on the committee can quite figure out how we got here and where all the time went. Is everything done? Is everything ready? Well, yes, it is. Don’t worry. On that front we are fine. On the emotional side of things? Well, we are not so sure. As a committee we were so focused on making sure that everything was ready that it has only just hit us that we should be…
