2014 beckons
I don’t know what 2014 is the year of. Apart from being the Year of the Green Wood Horse. And apparently the International Year of Family Farming so please think about where your food and consumer goods come from and whether they are ethically and sustainably produced. But it is 2014 now. 2013 has gone. I was busy in 2013 and so it flew by fast. The editing conference is over and I can breathe again. In December you all nearly decimated my server by loving the How to tell if you are an editor post so much so thanks for that. Clearly humour wins you over. If you want…

How to network at an editors' conference
Or any other conference really. And by network, I mean meet, chatter, gossip with, not just pop up, deliver your 15 word elevator speech, exchange cards and dash off again. And for those who are still a bit behind, this is the 6th National IPEd Editors’ Conference we are discussing which will be held in Perth in Fremantle in April 2013. In about three months’ time in other words. Before the conference (one is assuming you have already registered for it): Find the program – I have made it easy for you, it’s here. Check out the list of who will be there as speakers and presenters for each session.…

2013's very odd resolution list
This being the start of 2013, of course everyone is talking about New Year Resolutions. In fact, come December 1st everyone starts ruminating on this topic. And then of course there is a lot of angst over what one hasn’t done yet and that horrible nagging feeling that somehow you are running out of time to do X, Y and Z and therefore be happy. So in the interests of preserving some sanity here, because let’s be honest, me being me, I have very little sanity or so people tell me, let’s do this differently. What was 2012 like? Well, lets see. It was unexpectedly social at points – in…

The Naked Scientists' Mexican Twave
So I suddenly saw that the BBC wanted to cancel the science Q & A radio show The Naked Scientists and that they had organised a massive #savethenakedscientists mexican twave where they tried to get one tweet retweeted around the world within the hour that they usually have their show on the air. Here are the tweets because it’s going on now and you can join in. Tweets about “#savethenakedscientists”

Freelance Friday: The marketing methods that are working
I thought this might help the other freelancers out there. Over the past year and a bit, I have been experimenting with all sorts of methods of marketing my services. Here are my results so far: 1) The website has paid for itself more than a hundred times over. It has had a huge effect in generating income for me. It costs about $100 AUD per year to both host the files and rent the domain name and it brings me income that vastly out does that. People find me via Google and it pays off massively. 2) You need to market your different services separately. I market my writing services…
