Day 1: Home on my back, home where there is a bed

    May 30, 2018 / No Comments

Oh good heavens, day 1 and am I tired. It was a whirlwind weekend with a wedding and various wedding related celebrations and the attempt to pack a bag that does not want to take on pairs of shoes, two saris and related accoutrements and another trenchcoat. “Do you think this fellowship will be useful?” my mother asks, as I decide where the notebooks will go: main bag, carry on bag or laptop bag? I look at her. I know what she means – Sedition took twelve years to write because I also had to live and it ended up on the back burner a lot and even after finishing it,…

My top 10 posts in 2016

    January 20, 2017 / No Comments

It is a fact of life that whenever you try to plan your life you end up dropping something at some point – life intervenes and you have to. You have to prioritise. In 2016 it was this blog. But it is interesting to see what my top 10 posts were for 2016 in terms of how many people viewed/read them. I got views despite not being as active as I wanted to be on the blog. I am hoping to change that this year. It is also interesting to see what people read and to try and unpick why that was the case. PS: All headings are clickable and…

My story on China’s circuit breaker mechanism

    March 30, 2016 / No Comments

I recently got back from two months in Sri Lanka where I worked as a weird mix of intern and reporter and production assistant and researcher for both a TV channel called Newsfirst and a radio channel called Yes FM. They allowed me to take some of the work I had done for my portfolio when I left. So here is some of the work I did. This is the story on the circuit breaker mechanism that China trialled in early January. It was part of why the global economy in January was so shaky that oil prices got affected a lot more than they otherwise might have been. I…

Week 4 or How to survive NYE week in Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka December 2015 – February 2015 Trip

    January 3, 2016 / 2 Comments

It's been a weird week to say the least. It's been the kind of week where you think it has been a few days since something happened and in reality it was just 24 hours ago. Yeah, that kind of week. That's probably due to NYE being smack bang in the middle of the week and that driving everyone a little crazy but nevertheless it was rather odd.

Christmas in Colombo: Sri Lanka December 2015 – February 2016 Trip

    December 27, 2015 / 1 Comment

I landed in Colombo, Sri Lanka on the 3rd of December but I have just finished off Week 3 of my foray into local TV and radio journalism over here and it has been interesting. I haven’t really travelled anywhere in Week 3 unlike Week 2 that saw me take this two day jaunt down the Southern coast and I was hoping that they would send me out to do more of the same but it didn’t happen in Week 3. Come the end of Week 3 it was Christmas which made me realise that I switch back and forth in to whichever mode – Sri Lankan or Australian –…

“How would you like to go out?” I look up at my temporary boss for two months. Have I already managed to make myself feel unwelcome on the newsroom floor? Was he talking about their little promo thing elsewhere in the city? Was it an errand? “Out? Out of the building?” “No, like going out – out of the city, outstation?” Out of the city. Out of the city is technically not a problem. I mean, he’s asking someone who has gallivanted merrily around the globe. Crossing the country would not be an iss

[ezcol_1third]Given that I am now living outside of Sri Lanka, I don’t often write about Sri Lanka on this blog because I acknowledge that there are limits to what I know about what is going on. Things I am not aware of because I am not on the ground in Colombo to hear or see them that might be factors for example and unreported online. But it doesn’t change the fact that I am always interested in and affected by what happens in Sri Lanka. I acknowledge my position now as a member of the diaspora but that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to know or don’t care. I…
